Islas Marías, the cultural center that imprisoned José Revueltas
More than a hundred years ago, Islas Marías were converted into a penitentiary center that held criminals and political prisoners, creating a myth around this place.
In 2000, this land was recognized by UNESCO as a protected natural area, and became the Muros de Agua Environmental and Cultural Education Center, José Revueltas; named by the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in 2018.
Today, this tourist center receives hundreds of visitors daily who seek to encounter nature through guided tours.
Located in María Madre island, the largest of the archipelago, the cultural center contributes to the environmental stability of the region, while growing as a tourist destination with the Pueblo Mágico of Puerto Balleto.
